More facts have continued to emerge on how the planned defection of one of the leading gubernatorial aspirants on the platform of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, Prof. Abdulraheem Oba and a chieftain of the party, who is also the former State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Iyiola Oyedepo was arrested by the party’s National Chairman, Com. Aliyu Adams Oshiomole, this medium have gathered.
It would be recalled the APC gubernatorial primaries which held on Oct. 6th 2018 resulted in several protests with most of the aspirants strongly disagreeing with the announcement of the oil mogul, Alh. Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq as the winner.
Few hours however, most of the aggrieved aspirants even while expressing disappointment with the manner the primary exercise was conducted, threw their support behind the announced winner, with the exception of Prof. Abdulraheem Oba and Alh. Yaman Abdullahi both of whose supporters stagged protest demanding the declaration of their principal as the winner of the primary exercise.
Leading the pack of aspirants to accept the outcome was the banker turned politician, Alh. Lukman Mustapha who is also the Chairman of SOBI 101.9FM who while condemning the avoidable irregularities that characterized the primaries promised to work with the announced candidate in the interest of the liberation struggle, stressing that he’ll give everything within his powers towards ensuring Kwara is taken from the ruling hegemony in 2019.
Following in quick succession was the Director General of National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) Mallam, Ishiaq Modibbo Kawu, Alh. Akeem Lawal, Alh. Yayah Gobir, Alh. Tajudeen Audu, Mallam Saliu Mustapha, Hon. Moshood Mustapha among others.
According to insider sources who were in the know, Chief Iyiola Oyedepo who was the main structure behind the aspiration of Prof. Oba summoned a meeting of bloc stakeholders where the idea of leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC) for another party who’ll offer the aggrieved former Unilorin Vice-Chancellor it’s gubernatorial ticket was a top consideration.
However, sensing the danger the proposed defection might pose to the chances of the APC in the general election, the National leadership of the party led by Com. Oshiomole convened a meeting of all aspirants in Abuja, on Thursday, 11th Oct. 2018.
According to multiple sources at the meeting, Com. Oshiomole was said to have pleaded with all the gubernatorial aspirants on the noticed irregularities that trailed the party primaries in the State, stressing that in the interest of party unity and the liberation aspiration of Kwarans, the shortcomings should be overlooked and all should support the candidature of Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq.
He qouted Oshiomole to have said “This meeting is not convened for long speeches and fault finding, it is convened to appeal to all aggrieved aspirants to please sheath sword in the interest of party unity and the liberation yearnings of all Kwarans.
” While we agree that the gubernatorial wasn’t perfect, we must all be oblivious of the fact that the INEC timetable is against us and the option of conducting a fresh primaries will only lead to the forfeiture of the party’s chances of fielding a gubernatorial candidate and that would be disastrous.
“In the light of this, I plead with all the aspirants and other chieftains of the party to give peace a chance and unite behind the party’s candidate so as to have a solid chance of winning Kwara come 2019” he added.
This meeting it was gathered put a temporary stop to the proposed defection of the aggrieved gubernatorial aspirants, who while choosing to remain in the party made demands being given the opportunity of nominating the Deputy Gubernatorial flag bearer.
It is however not clear, if the demands was accepted or not, all attempts made at getting confirmation from Prof. Oba were futile as at the time of filing this report.
