A former United Nations Under Secretary, Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari has, postulated that Nigeria’ll know no peace, until justice is married with development.
Professor Gambari who was the guest speaker at the thirty fourth convocation ceremony of the university of Ilorin, emphasised the importance of “justice and equitable development, both of which are the panacea of peace in every society.
He said, “Nigeria will know no peace until we learn to do justice to all manner of people without fear or favour. For Democracy to have it’s true meaning, it must being development to the people, however development aspirations will continue to be a mirage as development is only achievable in an atmosphere of peace. Sustainable development cannot be achieved without peace, while justice is the foundation on which peace is built” he stressed.
The Chancellor of the Kwara State University, said there could not be development if there is no peace, stressing the need to respect the dignity of human life and democratic freedom of Nigerians.
While speaking on the forthcoming polls, Professor Gambari charged the federal government to allow the electoral umpire to conduct fraud free elections, stressing the need to support and believe in the rules guiding the electoral process.
He asked political stakeholders to step up awareness in achieving peaceful election and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to build on the achievements of 2015 general elections that improved the profile of the country in the world.
Professor Gambari also kicked against hate speech and the use of derogatory statements before, during and after the general polls.
