Sequel to the petition written by Kwara Rebirth Ambassadors on November 8, 2018 to the Commissioner of Police, Kwara State Command and the State Director, Directorate of State Security on the alleged plans of politicians to provide vigilante uniform to thugs who’ll act under the guise of the uniform to foment trouble on the election day.
Acting on the petition, Kwara Rebirth Ambassadors and Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) were today (Tuesday, Nov. 13th) both invited by the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Bolaji Fafowora
Speaking on behalf of Rebirth Ambassadors, the State Coordinator Com. Abdulrasheed Akogun acknowledged the contributions of the VGN to maintaining and sustaining peace across the States especially at the grassroots.
Akogun however decried the attempt by unscrupulous politicians to infiltrate the ranks of the organization with the active connivance of some top echelon of the organisation, towards thwarting and denying the electorates a chance of a free resolve to choose at the polls on Saturday.
He said “On this note, we deemed it fit to alert the appropriate security agencies on the sinister plan, stressing that while it cannot be sincerely said that all members of the organization are complicit, it must nonetheless be established that a black sheep can thwart the good work of thousands. Therefore we demand the Withdrawal of VGN from active participation as an organisation in the Saturday election” he demanded.
Responding on behalf of VGN, the organization’s Head of Operations, Alh. Saka Ibrahim described VGN as a renowned community security organization, who’s only interest is the maintenance and promotion of peaceful coexistence across the State.
While noting that the organization appreciates the concern of the NGO with regards to the activities of VGN and the likely infiltration of their ranks by thugs, he however allayed fears of Kwarans, stressing that they’ve given instruction to their commands in the four affected local governments to stare clear of the election, adding that anybody seen wearing Vigilante uniform on the election day should be apprehended by the Police.
At the end of the over 1 hour deliberations by both parties, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations DCP Salihu Ganiyu who stood in for the Commissioner of Police appreciated both parties for their sense of patriotism and maturity.
Salihu however used the opportunity to reassure Kwarans especially residents of the affected local governments, while also assuring them that the Kwara State Police command will leave no stone unturned towards ensuring that the sanctity of the exercise is not compromised.
He said “With this resolve, I implore the authorities of the VGN to stare clear of the election on Saturday, they should come and vote as would all other electorates on Saturday without wearing the organisation’s uniform and returned to their home after casting their ballot” he stressed
